Friday night, Ida B. Wells High School’s Varsity Football team played their last home game of the season. While celebrating senior night, The Guardians played against the Jefferson Democrats, ultimately winning the game 54-32.
The game started off strong with IBW getting their first touchdown during the first few minutes. By the end of the first quarter, IBW was in the lead with a score of 22-0.
As the game went on, touchdowns from the Guardians continued as well. The stands were filled with cheering parents and students, all decked out in flannels and cowboy hats to fit the rodeo theme.
During the second quarter, the Democrats finally scored a few points. Yet, The Guardians held their strong lead, ending the first half 46-12.
During halftime, IBW’s cheer team performed on the field, filling the bleachers with excitement and support for the Guardians.
As halftime came to a close, the cheers and enthusiasm from the crowd grew, and chants such as, “Go Ida B.” filled the bleachers. While most of the points were scored in the first half, the crowd didn’t let the slower pace of the game stop them from celebrating.
The Guardians held their lead and ended the third quarter 54-24. Going into the final quarter, the Guardians were in a great spot and set back their pace, while still staying in the lead.
During the final minutes of the game, Jefferson tried to catch up and managed to add eight more points to their score, but that wasn’t enough. The Guardians successfully won the game 54-32.
In the upcoming weeks, the Guardians’ football team has plans to attend rival schools and play against them too. The next varsity game will be on Thursday night at Lincoln High School. To continue the celebration of the “Battle of the Birds,” our athletic department is introducing a “fan bus” that will bring students to Lincoln—so IBW students can support their team. Including Lincoln’s game, the varsity football team has three away games left.
