The 2024 OSAA Track & Field State Championship was held from May 16 to May 18 at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon in Eugene.
Student-athletes from around Oregon competed in both field and running events such as high and long jump, pole vaulting, and 100-meter hurdles and dashes.
Ida B. Wells students who competed at the state championships were seniors Asher Danielson, Marselis Griffiths, Charlier Kramer, Pierce Myers and Josephine Fale. Junior competitors were Dylan Dimond, Forrest Holt, Casey Miller, Max Smith, Avery Coker, Ava Malcomson and Sophie Weatherill. Sophomore competitors included Tyler Marshall and Addisen Prather and the only freshman competitor was Tilda Hathaway.
The first day of the championship was Thursday, May 16 and the first field events consisted of high jump, long jump, discus throw, javelin throw, shot put and pole vaulting for boys and girls 1A, 2A and 3A. The running events on Thursday were the preliminaries for boys and girls 1A, 2A and 3A for the 3000 and 800-meter run; the 100, 200 and 400-meter dash along with the 100 and 300-meter hurdles.
On the morning of Friday, May 17, the same field and prelim running events were held for the 4A, 5A and 6A boys and girls meets. Friday evening held the finals for the 1A, 2A and 3A meets that were held on Thursday, along with the boys and girls 4×400 and 4×100 meter relay.
That Saturday was the last day of the championship with the finals events held for the 4A, 5A and 6A student-athletes, along with their 4×400 meter relay.
For the 6A championship held on Saturday, Asher Danielson, a senior at Ida B. Wells High School, came in second place for the 3000-meter run with a new school record of 8:14.93. Danielson also came in first place for the 1500-meter run.
Avery Coker, a junior at IBW came in second place for the 100-meter hurdles prelims and came in first place for the 100-meter hurdles finals, setting a new school record of 14.59.
The championship marks the end of the 2023-24 track and field season for Ida B. Wells and the final one for IBW seniors. Those who participated in the state championship, as well as the PIL Districts, have made many new personal records and look forward to next year’s season.
