The mini duck phenomenon has made its way to Ida B. Wells High School! The idea of hiding mini plastic ducks has spread worldwide, all for the purpose of spreading joy.
For example, Jeep owners will “duck” each other’s cars as a sign of respect from Jeep owner to Jeep owner. If you ever spot a Jeep, you might see a collection of ducks on the dashboard. Ducks can also be found on cruise ships with a tag usually saying the holder’s name and where they’re from. The rubber ducks on cruise ships will usually be found wearing a captain’s outfit to fit the theme even more.
This all began when a 10-year-old girl in 2018 was simply trying to make someone else smile. Since this tradition started it has inspired new Facebook groups to be created that discuss, where to buy the ducks, best places to hide them and more. This tradition has now spread to schools, becoming a popular trend in the last few years.
At IBW, it is prevalent. People hide all sorts of animals, such as little frogs, seals and dogs; but most commonly, ducks. You can find these little creatures almost anywhere in the school, sometimes even on the ceiling. However, IBW leadership students have recently decided to join the fun and hide little owls around the school.
This year’s homecoming spirit week contained a small twist. Little owls would be hidden around the school with the reward of a raffle ticket. Students could turn them in at room 143 with the chance to win 10 dollars towards the student store. Owls were found not only in the hallways, but in classrooms. “It’s a great idea. And they’re very cute,” said Aaron Olsen, a Health Occupations and Sports Medicine teacher at IBW.
The school putting a twist on the duck trend is a great way to bring joy into the classroom. Classes can be hard and sometimes taking a break in the hallway can be a way to calm down. Finding a duck unexpectedly is a surprise lots of people would love in their lives.
Next time you see a duck or an owl will you keep it or hide it? It’s up to you.
