The fan-favorite Netflix animated TV show, Arcane, first premiered on November 6, 2021. Now, 3 years later, the long awaited second season is here. The series is based on the popular video game League of Legends and tells the origin story of two iconic champions, Vi and Jinx, who just happen to be sisters.
League of Legends is an online multiplayer team-based game. The five player teams’ objective is to face off and destroy the other team’s base. As of now, League of Legends still has an active monthly player base of 150 million.
The idea of Arcane came about in 2015 after Riot Games had intentionally stepped into other forms of media such as cinematic trailers and music videos. Arcane was a long term strategy to give Riot credible praise and recognition as storytellers across different mediums.
When Arcane first released on Netflix in 2021, it was a hit with a 100% on the Rotten Tomato meter. People loved the series for the art, world building, story telling and characters. Arcane changed the way fans thought about their favorite in-game characters. In the game, Vi, one of the main characters in the franchise, is shown as a brash, hotheaded, energetic brawler. However, in the series, another side of Vi is shown. The caring side who just wants to take care of her sister. The series did an amazing job on expressing the characters’ emotions to the viewers.
Something that makes Arcane so great is that you don’t need to know about the game to watch it. However, since the series was released on Nov. 6, 2021, League of Legends went from 115 million players to 150 million.
As the nine episode series first season came to a close, viewers wondered what would happen next. The first season left the audience on a cliff hanger with many questions. As years went by, teasers for the next season were slowly released, the first in early January. On Sep. 5, the official trailer and release date were dropped.
The second season comes in a three part installment, beginning with the first part that premiered on November 9, 2024.
