As fall sports at Ida B. Wells High School end, it’s time to prepare for the new season of winter sports in our community. Starting on Nov. 18, here at IBW, we have upcoming practices and games from our basketball, swimming and wrestling teams, as well as, our snowboarding and skiing clubs.
As of Monday, Nov. 18, tryouts for the women’s basketball team took place. The varsity women’s team is to have their first game on Dec. 10 at West Salem at 6:30 p.m., while the JV women’s team is having their first game the same day at 5 p.m. The JV2 women’s team will have their first game on Dec. 13 against Newberg at 4:15 p.m.
Tryouts for the men’s basketball team occurred also on Nov. 18. For the varsity, JV and freshmen teams, their first game is to take place on Dec. 6, while JV2 will have their first game on Dec. 28 against South Salem.
The complete schedules for the men’s and women’s teams can be found at osaa.org
For the wrestling team, practices will take place in the wrestling rooms at Jackson Middle School from 4 to 6 p.m. throughout the school week. The first wrestling tournament for JV and varsity men will take place on Friday, Dec. 6, at Reynolds High School, and the first women’s wrestling tournament will take place the day after at Century High School.
The rest of the 2024-25 wrestling season can be found here.
The swim team at IBW is a no-cut sport, encouraging all students to participate. The season began earlier on Nov. 13 and practices are held at the Southwest Community Center (SWCC) Pool from 8 to 9 p.m. There are also dry-land trainings from 4 to 5 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays.
The swim team meets schedule can be found here.
At IBW we also have a snowboarding and skiing team, made up of a recreation and competition team. The recreation team has the opportunity to go up to the Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Resort every Wednesday; the team doesn’t have formal coaches, but they have mentors available to help when needed. For the competition teams, they go up the mountain on Thursdays and new members will be coached to possibly participate in some competitions.
More information about both the IBW snowboarding and skiing teams can be found here.
If you are interested in joining a team, be sure to check out their schedules on ibwathletics.com, alongside the contact information for coaches. Joining a sport is a great way to gain experience, build confidence and form a community with teammates and coaches. Our wrestling and swimming teams are always encouraging people to join.
