Imagine you’re invited to one of the biggest music, social and fashion events of the year: Coachella. The lights are bright, the music is electric and the attire people are wearing is close to runway-worthy. At least that’s how Coachella used to be for the last couple of years.
But Coachella isn’t the same crowd as it used to be. In recent years, the festival has “fallen off,” according to many people on social media. Some blame an influencer takeover, while others speculate it has to do with the lineup of artists for Coachella.
Outfits ranging from futuristic to basic styles made their debut at Coachella and had people scathing. Many people on apps like “TikTok,” Instagram and YouTube took to criticizing the outfits worn by influencers, saying things like “Coachella fits this year did not eat” and “Why were the Coachella fits this year so basic?” Comment sections of these social media apps have also been flooded with similar things complaining about how there was no originality to the outfits being worn. Coachella is not exactly a themed event; some say that you should let people wear what they want, while others say that it’s disrespectful that they aren’t adhering to a certain “dress code.” The dress code in question isn’t strict and is mostly set in place so people don’t expose their bodies too much. There is no comment about what style you should dress in.
Others speculate that Coachella has fallen off because the music is allegedly not “with the times.” Popular artists such as Lady Gaga, Charli XCX and more were invited to perform their music. People claim that the overall theme for all of the music wasn’t very apparent due to several genres of music being performed at the shows.
On the other hand, some people said they liked the variety and that bringing older artists was perfect, as it added that extra flare to Coachella, claiming it fit with the nostalgia many people feel during the famous festival. A student at Ida B. Wells High School, sophomore April Zauner, said “I felt like Green Day was kind of outdated. I get that they’re really popular, but I just don’t feel like a lot of people in their twenties would usually buy tickets for Green Day.” This furthers the idea that the genres didn’t make sense together. Zauner also said that she doesn’t understand why Post Malone was brought to perform at Coachella . “Post Malone was also kind of out of place, it was kind of like who actually listens to that?”
“Other than the outfits and music lineup, what else was wrong with Coachella?” This is a question asked a lot that people haven’t taken kindly to. People that b went to Coachella reportedly had a problem with the showers and hygiene in the event. According to both social media users who have gone to the event and Coachella websites, the shower is small with a sink and toilet. There is no soap, shampoo or conditioner provided, as many of the showers (unless you paid for a villa or a hotel) are communal. Some complain about having to bring more luggage just for toiletries but most complain about the hygiene of the whole situation.
While not all of the people attending Coachella and the spectators watching the social media posts had a problem with the festival this year, many did. So, the commonly asked question of how Coachella has supposedly “fallen off” has been answered not by this article but by the people.
