“Wuthering Waves” easily takes its place as one of the most visually appealing games in 2025. Its stunning visuals have captured the eyes of many gamers, and its large explorable world has sunk into the hearts of many players.
“Wuthering Waves” is an open world RPG (role playing game) styled gacha. An open world RPG is a game in which the player is given a large pre-set interconnected world to explore. It features a more non-linear way of playing, such as games like “Genshin Impact,” “Elden Ring” and others. A non-linear way of playing has risen in popularity in recent years, as its way of allowing players to choose how they progress the story has become more and more intriguing.
A gacha game, on the other hand, is a game where your progression is more so based on randomness and systems like a banner system.
A banner system is the main way of unlocking characters within gacha games. Players spend in-game currency for a chance to get the character they want – in other words, gambling. There are micro-transactions to buy this currency, and typically the games only give a set amount of the currency for free, to incentivise spending.
So, what makes “Wuthering Waves” so special that it has become a top grossing game?
Well for starters, it is visually stunning. By far the most appealing gacha game to the eyes, and one of the best looking released games in this current day and age.
The story is also quite good, however, it has a rough start. It’s not until you get further down the story that it actually starts to get interesting. The story follows the main character and player, Rover. You are off exploring the different regions of Solaris-3, the world this all takes place in. You face different nations’ problems, different villains and continue to explore the vast world.
The combat system of “Wuthering Waves” is great at its core. The player is allotted three character slots per team, and plays as one of them at all times. They are allowed to switch between any of these characters at any point, with a small cooldown. Sometimes if you swap the character will perform a special attack upon entering the battle.
Every character has a basic attack that can perform a combo when used in sequence. They also have a skill that performs a special move on a cooldown depending on the character. And lastly they have an ultimate that can be used once the character has generated enough energy from using other skills and attacks. The combat goes much further in depth in game, especially with harder content, but that’s something you’d have to explore on your own.
“Wuthering Waves” is overall doing much better than it was last year, when it had a buggy mobile experience, as well as a lot of optimization problems. The game is much more runnable on most devices now, and is an enjoyable experience– not that it wasn’t last year for those who weren’t experiencing some of the previously mentioned issues. The game is most definitely worth a download and a play.
