Like clockwork, new students join and are welcomed into Ida. B Wells High School. However, some new students aren’t always as fresh as you think. In fact, some have already become familiarized with the new environment.
For many, having a younger sibling in school with you can be a blessing or a curse. You might enjoy the feeling of seeing familiar faces around school, or it might feel like you can’t get rid of them. However, it’s not uncommon for siblings to have opposite interests. At times, it can present itself in multiple ways, such as participating in different educational pathways or sports.
Savannah and Shelby McCae are two sisters here at IBW. Savannah is in her senior year, pursuing the education pathway, while Shelby is in her freshman year. Savannah enjoys having her sister in school, but also finds it a little weird. “Yeah, it’s really fun, [and] it’s very strange. Maybe this could be the cause of them taking different pathways,” says Savannah
“I’m doing the business pathway and then the health pathway.” Shelby says. While their interests may not match and they may feel a little awkward in school together, they still enjoy each other’s company.
Another set of siblings is the Allens. Una is a senior, and she is finishing the art pathway this year. While Una’s sister, Ninon, is a freshman, diving into the health occupations pathway. Ninon says, “I think it’s [because] I’m interested [in health occupations].” Ninon also mentions, “I wanted to do art, but I couldn’t get into the class.” Even after Una leaves, Ninon may carry out her legacy in the art studio.
Twins are quite common here at IBW. The Collins, in particular, have extremely opposite interests. Peter and Sydney are both seniors this year and greatly appreciate being in school together. Sydney says, “I personally enjoy it because I feel like I have always had someone there to be there for me, and someone that I can run to if something goes wrong.”
Peter states, “I’d say [the] same here, I mean it’s all we know because we’ve always been to school together.” Aside from their tight connection, Sydney is following the health occupations pathway in hopes of becoming a nurse, while Peter plans to join the Marines. As for classes, “[Peter] really enjoys doing shop and woodwork,” says Sydney.
At the end of the day, if you have a sibling either in school with you or not, you’ll have a friend for life who will be there for you when you need a shoulder to lean on.
