Video games as a whole are a global phenomenon. They exist everywhere, and have their equal haters and fans everywhere. The United States in particular has seen growth in love for video games over the past few years.
The US is no stranger to games from other countries, with a few of them even being some of the country’s most popular games today. There’s Nintendo, Sony, Ubisoft—the list goes on.
Gaming has a variety of genres, and with each different platform, comes games from all around the globe.
The horror genre has always been popular, in gaming and other media. A few well known horror titles in the US include: the “Silent Hill” series, the “Siren” series and the “Resident Evil” series, all originating from Japan.
Many horror games nowadays more so focus on their story and create a larger narrative that can be enjoyed by more niche audiences. This has led to a popular rise in more simplistic looking art styles being used for horror games made by indie game developers.
The gacha genre of games has really only grown in popularity since 2020, due to the hit release of “Genshin Impact.” In this day and age, some of the highest grossing games and most popular games are gacha games. They make billions of dollars per year, cumulatively or sometimes individually. They also happen to be very popular in the US, despite a lot coming from regions and countries outside of the US. Some of the most famous gacha games are “Fate/Grand Order,” “Honkai Star Rail” and “Limbus Company.”
“Limbus Company” has a sort of gambling mechanic. You spend in-game currency to have a chance at getting the specific thing you want. Often these games come with a system known as a “pity” in which you are guaranteed to get what you want if you spend a certain amount. These kinds of games aren’t everyone’s preference, but some do entail a great story, great visuals and great gameplay.
Another major game genre would be action-adventure games. One of the most popular Nintendo games is primarily an open world adventure game, called “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.”
Games made outside the US often also bring their culture along with them. Some of which, like the “Perona” series made by Atlas, bring real cultural values from Port Island, since it’s where the game takes place.
As a whole, gaming is a cultural experience, whether made up or real. Gaming is a universal fun for people of different cultures, ethnicities and nationalities to get together and enjoy a good time.
