If you’ve ever gone on Netflix to watch your favorite show and found out it’s gone, you’re not alone. Netflix removes movies and TV shows every month, and many viewers wonder why this keeps happening. Even though it may feel random, there are many reasons behind it. Some of them are simple while others involve big changes in the streaming world.
The biggest reason Netflix removes shows is because licensing agreements expire. This means Netflix pays other companies like Paramount or Sony to let them stream their movies and shows. These deals only last for a certain amount of time and when that time ends, Netflix has two choices. They can either renew the deal or let the show leave Netflix permanently. If the studio wants too much money or Netflix thinks the show isn’t getting an adequate amount of views, they can decide not to renew it.
Many titles leaving in December 2025 are part of bigger contracts that will keep expiring into 2026. This means viewers should expect more movies and shows to leave Netflix throughout the year, especially ones owned by big studios like Warner Bros, Universal and Paramount. Some titles may return later if Netflix makes new deals, but many will move to different platforms permanently.
A lot of well known movies will leave Netflix starting in December 2025. Some of the titles leaving include:
- “Back to the Future”, “Back to the Future Part II” and Back to the Future Part III”
- “Beverly Hills Cop”
- “Clueless”
- “Edge of Tomorrow”
- “Inglourious Basterds”
- “Wonka”
- “Paddington”
Several popular TV shows will leave too, like:
- “How I Met Your Mother”
- “The 100”
- “Arrow”
- “Supernatural”
All of these shows are leaving because their licensing deals are ending.
If you want to make sure you don’t miss a favorite movie or series before it leaves: Check Netflix’s “Leaving Soon” section on the app. Search online for monthly lists of expiring titles. Watch or download shows early if you know they’re leaving soon.
This recent disappearance of media off of Netflix is affecting students at Ida B. Wells-Barnett High School(IBW). Emery Pliska, a sophomore at IBW says, “Yeah, [Netflix removing movies and TV shows] does make me upset. The 100 was one of my favorite shows.” A lot of these shows and movies have been on Netflix for years, meaning they will definitely be missed deeply.
Besides license expiration, another reason Netflix removes shows is because some studios have created their own streaming platforms. Years ago, these studios were willing to let Netflix stream their content. But now that Netflix makes billions of dollars from their shows, they want the shows for their own apps like: Disney+, HBO Max, Peacock, Paramount+, Hulu and more. Shows like “Friends” and “The Office” left Netflix because their owners wanted to stream them exclusively on their own platforms.
Over the past several years, Netflix has been creating more Netflix originals. These are shows and movies created by Netflix like “Stranger Things,” “The Witcher” and “Bridgerton.” Netflix keeps these titles forever because they don’t have to pay another company to stream them. However, not all Netflix originals are fully owned by Netflix like “Peaky Blinders”, “The Killing” and “Longmire”. Some are coproduced or licensed for only a few years. So a few Netflix originals may disappear in the future if those contracts expire.
While it can be disappointing to see your favorites go, these changes are part of how the streaming industry works today. The best thing we can do as viewers is to stay alert of what’s leaving and watch our favorites before their deadlines arrive.
