“One Piece” is one of the most popular anime of all time. It’s specifically known for its daunting amount of episodes. Currently the anime has over 1,000 episodes and more are on the way. Over the years many animes have had live action adaptations, but in order for Netflix to want to make “One Piece” into a live action, you can’t help but wonder how things would unfold.
On Aug. 31, 2023 the first season of the live action was released. It included eight episodes that varied from 40-60 minutes long. Obviously this isn’t near the amount of episodes as the actual first season of “One Piece” was but, each episode still worked out well. The season spends one to two episodes on different arcs in the anime. If you’re unfamiliar, an arc is a self-contained storyline within a large series.
Additionally, the creators of the live action “One Piece,” Matt Owens and Steven Maeda spent more time on longer and more important arcs and less time on inconsequential arcs.
Due to the series doing so well, it eventually led to the creation of the second season which gives more opportunities for fans to see their favorite characters live.
A very important part of making this series work is the cast. Based on feedback from Facebook, many fans felt the cast portrayed the characters extremely well. One fan said, “All the characters felt natural and nothing was forced.” Luffy’s actor, Iñaki Godoy, looks like Luffy and also embodies his fun and energetic characteristics. Similarly to Godoy, the rest of the cast also does an amazing job playing their part and truly embracing their characters.
The first season performed very well and eventually led to the release of season two on March, 10, 2026. This season also introduces more well known characters and popular plot points
As for these new characters, one character in particular formed many questions for how they would be portrayed in the live action version of “One Piece”. Chopper is a humanoid reindeer that becomes the doctor for Luffy’s crew, named the straw hat pirates. This is also the arc that season two ended on.
The character, Chopper, couldn’t easily be played by a human, since he isn’t one, and he also takes on a variety of forms, including his main form which is just under three feet tall. This meant that bringing Chopper to life would need a hybrid approach. This featured computer-generated imagery and particle effects for his smaller form as well as prosthetics and a suit for his larger “heavy point” form.
Chopper isn’t the only character they used CGI for. The world of “One Piece” is full of complicated islands, strange beasts and large swaths of water. These live action aspects needed the assistance of CGI to help bring this world to life. Furthermore, specific sets were even fully constructed in water tanks to simulate the real effects of the interaction between buildings and water. For example, the straw hat pirate ship is fully constructed and is to scale for these water tanks and other scenes.
Another exciting aspect of the new season is the introduction to Ms. Wednesday, also known as Vivi, the princess of Alabasta. Vivi is one of the most loved characters in the “One Piece” fandom and is a main character in the Alabasta arc. Vivi is not a permanent character in the series compared to the straw hat pirates; however, she has made a huge impact on fans and is seen a variety of times in the anime even after her arc.
Due to the way the live action adaption is pacing their episodes, Vivi was first introduced at the start of season two, and will continue to appear during season three, when the Alabasta arc will have fully taken place.
Overall, the “One Piece” live action has been very popular and is helping to bring new viewers into the “One Piece” community. If you find the sheer amount of episodes the anime has to be intimidating, the live action is proving to be a great alternative. Make sure to check out the series on Netflix to follow the adventure of Luffy and his crew.
