If you go into “Nirvanna: the Band – the Show – the Movie” thinking it’s going to be a normal movie, you would be dead wrong. It doesn’t follow a linear storyline and half the time it feels like things are just happening for no reason, but somehow that’s what makes it work.

It’s about the band trying to get a gig at a venue, but they never actually get there because everything goes wrong. The best part is that the producers play the characters that they wrote themselves. The show got popular because it mixes the usual scripted format with real people, so a lot of the reactions you see are genuine. The movie carries the same energy as the show, just bigger and more chaotic.
Johnson’s character is super overconfident and always coming up with crazy plans that make no sense. McCarrol’s character is mostly just there reacting to everything, usually confused but still going along with it regardless. Their dynamic is honestly the best part because it feels real, like they’re not even acting half the time. Matt Johnson has also made other films like “The Dirties” and “Operation Avalanche,” that have a similar feel. He has a very distinctive style that feels super real, almost like a documentary, even though it’s not.
The humor is also different from traditional comedy in movies. Instead of big jokes or punchlines, it’s more awkward and almost uncomfortable. A lot of the humor comes from how random people react to what the band is doing, which can often give viewers secondhand embarrassment. It feels similar to “Nathan for You,” a TV show where the joke is how real-life people deal with strange situations.
At the same time, the movie can feel messy. There isn’t a very clear plot and some parts drag on longer than they probably should. So if you like movies that are linearly structured and make sense the entire time, this movie probably isn’t for you.
