The extremely popular franchise, “Avatar,” directed by James Cameron, released its third movie on Dec. 19, 2025. The previous movie in the series, “Avatar: The Way of Water,” aired on Dec. 16, 2022, with mixed reviews. Its visuals and underwater motion capture were stunning; however, its overdone plot and long runtime were unpopular. “Avatar: Fire and Ash” has fans hoping for an exciting new story.
So far, “Avatar: Fire and Ash” has grossed around 36.5 million dollars on opening night. Compared to “Way of Water,” which on opening night grossed a total of 134.1 million dollars.
Reviews so far have been mostly positive, with “Fire and Ash” sitting at a 66% on Rotten Tomatoes, representing critics, and a 90% on the Popcornmeter, representing fans. The majority of audiences found the movie’s visuals to be enjoyable and mesmerizing; however, the recurring plot has left viewers in a state of limbo, with some finding it frustrating, while others found it satisfying. Meanwhile, the movie’s length, sitting at three hours and 15 minutes, was too long for many viewers.
The account, “Movie Talk” on Facebook said, “I’ll start with the positives I loved the cast, the characters, the action scenes and the visuals, but as with my issues with ‘The Way of Water’, it was too long and the story got a bit repetitive.” Many comments to this post had similar opinions. Shaving 30 minutes off the movie wouldn’t hurt and might have made fans enjoy it more.
However, the “Avatar” franchise is far from over as two more movies have been scheduled for release within the next three years. This is worrisome to some audiences because the past three movies have been narratively repetitive. The hope is that, in the future, they find a way to branch out and have less predictable plot points. So far, each movie has a similar build-up consisting of several small battles, kidnapping and a final fight between multiple Na’vi clans and the humans. As a brief description the Na’vi people are fictional, blue, humanoid like creatures that populate the land of Pandora.
On the other hand, it was nice to see a new villain. Varang is a very powerful woman who believes that fire is the most powerful thing in their world compared to the god that the Na’vi warship called Eywa. Varang and her clan join the forces of Miles Quarich with the intention to rule over all Na’vi. Her intentions may be brutal, but paired with her fiery demeanor, she quickly became trending on TikTok and other social media platforms.
From trending moments to its breathtaking visuals, this movie is a must-watch. While it may have repeating themes, it’s very entertaining and has moments that you don’t want to miss. On the other hand, if you don’t want to sit through a three-hour movie in theaters, “Fire and Ash” will be released on platforms like Disney+ roughly in the middle of 2026. Keep an eye out and enjoy taking a step into the world of Pandora.
