With the closing of many businesses in the Portland area, PDX takes the chance and goes for a full experience for its passengers with the addition of new restaurants and updated technology, as well as new modern wood architecture in the baggage check area.
The Portland International Airport Terminal Core Redevelopment Project is a two-billion-dollar expansion and improvement plan. It doubles the size of the ticketing area passengers visit during the flight process, reimagining the passengers’ experience. Inspired by the Pacific Northwest’s natural beauty, this innovative design seamlessly blends sustainability and functionality.
The design features a scalloped, basketweave architecture, which is designed to give people the feeling of a walk through the Pacific Northwest forest. Plus, the 49 skylights installed in this area truly light up the space during the day. Additionally, in the area where travelers exit security, and oftentimes where families greet passengers, there is a staircase on each side of the walkway, made out of locally sourced timber, providing a place for Portlanders, including those who use wheelchairs or walkers, to relax before picking up their family and friends.
This new structure has really had a big impact on the community. Passengers enjoy the modern experience with new technology and equipment, and the unique choice of food options for passengers to enjoy.
Matt Morrison, a freshman physics teacher at Ida B. Wells-Barnett High School and someone who has been to PDX many times with his family, said: “I believe that the new renovation will intrigue Portland’s visitors to the Portland Airport.”
Since the renovation, the number of visitors to the Portland Airport increased by 6%; the number of people who flew through PDX Airport was over 150,000 people; this number is said to increase greatly with the 60 new and returning Oregon-based foods and retail options.
Marla Wilkinson, a freshman English teacher at IBW, said, “I’ve been to the airport once since the renovation; it felt so fancy when I walked in that I thought it was very inviting, and the community seems to love it.” The framing of the wood board gives a very particular look that people seem to love.
Not only does the airport modernization help to increase the number of Portland tourists, but it also makes PDX more efficient and smoother running. With the hope that the number of tourists will increase due to the maximum space capacity of the larger public areas. PDX continues to adapt and upgrade its space to accommodate any traveler.
