President Donald Trump has a new “No. 1 fan.” Rapper and pop icon Nicki Minaj has made a dramatic turn towards the MAGA movement, shocking not only her fanbase (also known as the Barbz) but much of the country. She was often seen as an ally for people of the LGBTQ community and women of color, even advocating for immigrants on her now-deactivated Instagram account. She’s now fully supporting the man whom so many of her fans stand so strongly against.
In November of 2025, Minaj started hinting at her conservative shift, praising Trump for his support of persecuted Christians in Nigeria on X (formerly known as Twitter). In that same month, she also re-posted anti-trans and anti-immigrant posts made by the White House. They consisted of “No men in women’s sports,” and “Our cities are safer than ever,”
Then, in December, she made a surprise appearance at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest. She joined Erica Kirk, the widow of Turning Point USA’s creator, Charlie Kirk. This political shift surprised many of her fans and the pop culture community, as Minaj had never expressed much interest in the MAGA movement before her posts in November.
To understand fans’ confusion and surprise, you have to understand a little bit more about her background.
Despite her recent comments about immigration policy, Minaj is actually an immigrant herself. She was born in Trinidad and moved to the United States when she was five years old. She grew up with an interest in music and even attended a music and art school in New York City to pursue acting. Minaj became a backup singer for local artists, and uploaded some of her songs to Myspace. They were seen by a local record label, and she eventually caught the attention of rapper Lil Wayne, which launched her music career.
Her debut album, “Pink Friday”, was released in 2010 and gained popularity quickly. Since then, she’s been an influential figure in pop culture. With her provocative lyrics and fiery personality, she gained an enormous fan base.
For a long time, she advocated for immigrants and the LGBTQ community. She made references to Donald Trump’s immigration policies in her songs, rapping “Island girl, Donald Trump want me go home,” in her song “Black Barbies”. In 2018, she spoke out on Instagram about how Trump was taking children away from their families, saying she had come to the United States illegally and couldn’t imagine what it would be like to have your family taken from you. “This is so scary. Please stop this,” she posted.
One might think Minaj’s political views were fairly progressive after reading that post. So what made her go from speaking out against Trump’s immigration policies to publicly holding hands with him?
There are many different theories fans have come up with to explain this. Many believe someone is paying Minaj, or that she’s trying to gain full citizenship, since she admitted on her now-deactivated Instagram account to coming to the U.S. illegally. So could she be using her support to get on the President’s good side?
Douglas Orofino, the choir teacher at Ida B. Wells High School, has a different perspective on Minaj’s sudden shift. He thinks that she may be supporting Trump not for his beliefs, but because she feels he is being ‘bullied.’
“My understanding of her support is actually that it’s not quite as much aligned with supporting this man’s policies,” Orofino said, “More like the way that she hears people, in her words, bullying Trump.”
Orofino also said he thinks people may assume this situation to be a PR stunt, but he wants to believe that Minaj is actually making her own decision about her political views. “It resonates with her because I think she’s received a lot of criticism and a lot of what she perceives as bullying.”
However, Natalie Bloom, a freshman at IBW and a former Nicki Minaj fan, has an opposing opinion.
“I was very shocked,” Bloom said. “I think she’s being paid to do this.” Bloom shares that she’s seen a lot of fans taking down posters, stopping further listening to her music, and overall withdrawing support for Minaj in general. “I definitely don’t want to support her if what she stands for is something that’s so far from my beliefs.”
Celebrities are also speaking out against Nicki Minaj for her political views. South African comedian Trevor Noah took some intentional digs at Minaj while hosting the 2026 Grammys on Feb. 1.
“Nicki Minaj is not here; she is still at the White House with Trump discussing very important issues,” Noah said, drawing cheers from the audience.
This year, the Grammys notably took a very political turn, with celebrities like Bad Bunny, Billie Eilish, Olivia Dean, and others protesting ICE in their speeches. This sparked a retaliation from Trump and Minaj on social media.
“God Almighty will reveal Himself to them,” Minaj tweeted on X. “Every tongue that rises against me in judgment shall be condemned & put to shame.”
Trump also posted about how the Grammys are “the WORST” and insulted Trevor Noah after he joked about Trump trying to acquire Greenland. “Because Epstein’s island is gone, he needs an island to hang out with Bill Clinton,” Noah said.
The fact that celebrities at the Grammys are openly criticising Nicki Minaj shows how much her support of the Trump administration has affected public opinion, especially since many of her fans stand for the opposite of what she supports now. But is the public’s frustration enough for Minaj to lose the Barbz?
